Reality assembly

Your sense of where and who you are is built, piece by piece, by the body and the mind together.

What it is

Proust describes waking in the dark, unsure where he is. The room spins. Before the mind can name the place, the body starts working it out, using “the memory of its ribs, its knees, its shoulders” to recall the bed, the doors, the angle of the light.

The point: perception isn’t a camera. Reality is assembled, constantly, by body and mind working together.

How it shows up for me

I notice it most when I travel, and after bad sleep. It makes me gentler with myself on mornings when nothing feels quite real yet. The body is still assembling.
