Concept

Absorb and optimize

Quietly taking on the cost of a problem and engineering around it, instead of telling the person causing it.

What it is

You notice a problem. You solve it on your own. The other person never learns it existed. Efficiency goes up, and contact goes down.

It’s different from choosing, openly, to carry a cost for your team. The pattern is the silent version: it makes you necessary without making you known.

How it shows up for me

I do this a lot, and it looks like competence. At work and at home, I’d rather fix the thing than have the awkward conversation about the thing.

The question I still can’t always answer: when is absorbing the right move, and when is it avoidance wearing competence?
