Integration gap

The distance between understanding something about yourself and actually behaving differently.

What it is

Insight is fast. Behavior change is slow. The integration gap is the distance between the two: the insight gets written down, the framework gets a name, and the behavior moves much more slowly than the record. Sometimes so slowly that you rediscover the same insight months later without noticing it’s a repeat.

It helps to treat the gap as latency rather than failure. A condition you either have or don’t can only be graded pass or fail. Latency is a number, the time between the reflex firing and you seeing it, and a number can shrink.

How it shows up for me

I’m very good at insight. Too good, maybe. I’ve rediscovered some of my own lessons three times. Now I measure progress by how quickly I catch the old reflex, not by whether it still fires.
