What it is
Discipline creates systems that need less effort over time: automation, fundamentals, expertise. Mastering your desires means needing less to feel satisfied. That part is true, and it’s what gets sold in self-help books.
It’s not the whole story. Getting there takes time, stability, money, health and support that most people don’t have. What looks like success through good choices is often success through good choices plus an entry fee most people couldn’t pay.
There’s a darker reading too: in an economy where a stable home and a cushion used to be normal and now take exceptional effort, self-mastery is less a solution than a symptom. A rational response to an irrational system, and a temporary shelter, not a win.
How it shows up for me
I optimized my life for ease, and the cost of admission was obscene. I’m proud of the work. I’m also trying to stop talking as if anyone could have done it the same way.
