What it is
Knowing you’re one person among many, and being able to laugh at yourself about it. The two go together: it’s hard to be humble without humor, and humor without humility turns mean.
How it shows up for me
Turning 40, I joke that I’m a lot closer to death now. It’s a joke, and it’s also true, and laughing about it makes it easier to talk about the real things, like a will. Humor is how I lower the temperature in hard conversations. Humility is remembering that I might be the one who’s wrong.
