What it is
Shame is the painful sense of being flawed as a person. Guilt says “I did something bad.” Shame says “I am bad.”
Healthy shame can work like a moral compass, a signal that you crossed your own line. Toxic shame collapses into self-hatred, and it blocks the two things that would help: being yourself, and asking for what you need.
How it shows up for me
When I turn a mistake into a verdict on my whole self, I’ve crossed from guilt into shame. The fix that works for me is going back to the specific act: what did I do, and what can I do about it now?
