The Vegeta dynamic

Striving that only knows how to move when there is a rival to beat, even an imaginary one.

What it is

In Dragon Ball, Vegeta trains because Goku exists, not because he knows what he’s building toward. His arc is a warning as much as an inspiration: what happens to the drive when the rival stops mattering?

Motivation fueled by opposition, against debt, against weakness, against some softer version of yourself, needs the threat to stay credible. Motivation fueled by interest, drawing because it’s interesting, playing guitar because you want to, doesn’t need an enemy, and doesn’t run out when the enemy is gone.

How it shows up for me

A lot of my drive has been Vegeta: proving someone wrong, outrunning an old version of me. When I looked at what I’ve stuck with longest, it was all in the fun category. That’s the fuel I’m trying to switch to.
