What it is
Velocity loss is the distress that comes from a sudden drop in speed, agency and self-directed action. One week you’re moving fast and deciding everything. The next, a newborn, an injury, a layoff or a court date has you waiting on other people’s timelines.
It can look like irritability or depression. Underneath, it’s grief for your own momentum.
How it shows up for me
Paternity leave hit me this way. I love my kids, and I still felt caged by how slow everything became. Naming it as velocity loss helped me stop blaming the baby, or myself, and find small places where I could still move fast.
