Value

Integrity

Keeping the gap small between what I say and what I do.

What it is

My definition: the alignment between stated values and lived behavior. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about the gap between what you say matters to you and what you actually do, and how small you can keep it.

When it breaks

Say-do incoherence is a stated value that conflicts with what you actually did. It happens at every scale: a parent, a boss, a company, a government. When it breaks at the scale of institutions, trust erodes everywhere, and language turns into performance with nothing behind it.

There’s a healthy loop inside it, too: preach something, fail to live it, see the gap, examine it, integrate. Most people leave the loop by lowering the standard or by no longer looking. Staying in it means continuous friction, and continuous growth.

How it shows up for me

The point of having values at all is to practice and live them, every day, not to list them. A value I only talk about is a decoration. Practicing integrity brings me joy, which surprised me. It feels like being one piece instead of two.

When I’m out of line, dissonance doesn’t make me angry so much as dizzy. That’s how I know I care about this. The audit I try to run on myself: does the value I just claimed match the thing I just described doing?
