Amor fati

Love of fate: treating everything that happened, the loss included, as part of the life you would choose.

What it is

Amor fati is Latin for “love of fate.” It means seeing everything in your life, suffering and loss included, as necessary to it. Nietzsche gave it its sharpest form: in The Gay Science (1882) he wrote, “Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth!” and in Ecce Homo he called it his “formula for greatness in a human being.”

The attitude is older than the phrase. Epictetus wrote not to wish for things to happen the way you want, but to want them to happen the way they do.

How it shows up for me

I don’t think I love all of it. I think I’m learning to stop arguing with it. Some of the worst things that happened to me are also where the best parts of me came from, and pretending otherwise would be a kind of lie.
