Savage acceptance

Meeting reality exactly where it is, without compromise and without pretending it was meant to be.

What it is

Savage acceptance is being uncompromising about meeting reality where it is. A tree bends in the storm instead of snapping: flexible enough to survive, rooted in what matters.

It grows out of radical acceptance, from Marsha Linehan’s dialectical behavior therapy: fully accepting reality as it is, with your mind, heart and body, especially the parts you can’t change. Accepting isn’t approving. It’s stopping the fight against what already happened, so your energy can go to what’s next. Savage acceptance is that without the spiritual bypassing. No pretending everything happens for a reason, or that all experiences are equally good.

How it shows up for me

The gym is closed, so it’s calisthenics at home. The store is out, so I cook something else. My daughter asks to play, so I close the laptop, and reading time becomes building a fort.

It also replaces the scorekeeper. My mind wants to rate everything: the meal, the day, the person, myself. When I drop the rating and just take it in, I suffer a lot less and see a lot more.

My test question is “¿Esto me da paz?” Does this give me peace?
