Creative renunciation

Some of the best work comes from getting out of the way, not from expressing yourself harder.

What it is

Simone Weil argued that the highest art comes not from self-expression but from self-denial. In her view, creation itself was an act of restraint: stepping back so that something else could exist. An artist who empties themselves of ego makes room for something greater to come through.

The paradox is that the less you assert yourself, the more honest the work can become.

How it shows up for me

I feel it when I cook or write well. The good days are the ones where I stop trying to be impressive and just pay attention to the food, or the sentence, or the person I’m writing for.
