What it is
“Do better” is a motto. On its own it’s just a demand. What changes it is who’s saying it, and whether you’ve decided to own it.
When someone else says it to you in anger, it lands as an accusation. When you say it to yourself, after being honest about what happened, it becomes a direction.
How it shows up for me
A “do better” used to make me cry with anger. I’d feel the injustice of it, like the world had made me do whatever I did. After months of weekly therapy I made it my motto, because therapy forces you to be honest with yourself and vulnerable. It started with something one of my kids told me, eye to eye, and now it’s mine.
