Concept

Doing, not lecturing

Kids pick up what you do far more than what you tell them.

What it is

What we do, not what we lecture, is what echoes back from our children. Habits and inclinations get installed by example. If I want my kids to be excellent and happy, I have to practice excellence and work on being a balanced, fulfilled person myself.

Discipline belongs here too, and it isn’t the same as punishment. Discipline is not nasty or disrespectful. It’s teaching.

How it shows up for me

It’s the most humbling idea I know as a parent, because my kids copy my phone habits and my tone of voice far more faithfully than my speeches. When I want them to change something, I check whether I’m doing it first.
