Permission until told otherwise

"I have permission until someone tells me I don't." Why waiting for permission is often the real delay.

What it is

Many people wait for a spec, a sign-off, or an explicit go-ahead before starting. Others operate from the opposite default: I have permission until someone tells me I don’t. They start, do good work up front, and let the quality force the conversation.

The difference in speed can be huge, because often the permission already arrived and nobody noticed.

How it shows up for me

This is how I work, and it has served me well. It also has edges I’m careful with: it fits reversible work, and it’s wrong for anything that can’t be undone or that belongs to someone else. I’ve never tested whether it can be taught.
