Spirit

The non-physical part of me: my emotions and my character. An atheist's use of an old word.

What it is

When I say “spirit,” I mean the non-physical part of myself: my emotions and my character, what some people call the soul. I wrote it this way in 2024: “By ‘spirit’, I mean the non-physical part of myself. My emotions and my characters, or the ‘soul.’”

I’m an atheist, so the word doesn’t point to a supernatural being. It points to something real in me that isn’t muscle or bone.

How it shows up for me

I didn’t want to give up good words just because I gave up religion. Spirit, soul, grace: they still name things I care about, and I’d rather reclaim them than leave them behind.
