What it is
The landlord is the punishing, moralistic voice inside that demands a fee before you’re allowed to move on: some guilt, some shame, some self-suffering, paid up front. Only then does it let you forgive yourself or make progress.
It often presents as personality (“I’m just hard on myself”), but it’s usually a theology we absorbed: the idea that you have to suffer to deserve grace.
How it shows up for me
I wrote a whole essay about this, imagining what would have changed if God had gentle-parented us. The landlord in me still knocks. I’m learning to tell him the rent’s been paid.
