What it is
The scorekeeper is a moral accounting system many of us build in childhood. It quietly scores people’s actions against values and sorts them into two bins, roughly “pathetic” or “worthy of respect.” It also scores you: rest, care and worth become things you earn with points.
Its tell isn’t who it blames. It’s that there’s accounting at all. A common symptom is self-exemption: giving your own contradictions complexity and grace while reducing everyone else to a binary verdict.
How it shows up for me
Mine runs on almost everyone, if I’m honest. Catching it is the work. When I notice I’ve sorted someone into a bin in two seconds, I try to give them the same complexity I give myself.
