What sort of life to want

"Do whatever pleases you" does not help, because what pleases you depends on what life you think is good.

What it is

Moral philosophy, at its core, is about deciding what to do next, and more broadly what kind of life to lead and what kind of world to want.

David Deutsch’s thought experiment: imagine you’re suddenly the last human on Earth. You’d still face the question of what sort of life to want. “Do whatever pleases me most” doesn’t settle it, because what pleases you depends on your judgment of what a good life is, not the other way around. Our preferences aren’t fixed starting points. They’re shaped by our explanations.

How it shows up for me

It’s why I write values down. Not because they’re rules, but because what I want keeps changing, and I want it to change on purpose.
