What it is
A whole adult owns what they didn’t cause. Not blame, which belongs to whoever designed the harm and profits from it. Ownership: the part of the world within reach is yours to look after, whether or not you broke it.
The list of what a whole adult does is long and plain: leads, protects, is present, provides, nurtures, supervises, holds, makes it safe. The people around someone like that tend to grow up with good mental health.
It isn’t about sex or age. Plenty of people stay boys and girls into their sixties. Plenty of mothers raised children by being exactly this.
How it shows up for me
I started out saying “a real man,” and the more I thought about it, the more I realized I meant whole adults. My mother raised me, so a definition that needs a man would contradict my own life.
I also had to admit I’m inside the ranking, not above it: “I know which parts of me are a full child and which parts are a full adult. I can’t cover the sun with my hands.” The realization came to me late, so I try to remember that people who haven’t had it yet are standing where I once stood.
