Breathing

Slowing your breath on purpose, to calm down and put your attention on one thing.

What it is

Deliberate, deep breathing: the simplest tool you always have with you. Slowing the breath down on purpose helps your body settle and narrows your attention to one thing at a time.

How it shows up for me

I’ve done it all my life without a name: “I need to take deep breaths. Breathe, breathe, deep breath.” The name I use now, Total Concentration Breathing, I borrowed from the anime Demon Slayer, where a brother uses it to protect his sister. It fit exactly how I already used it.

Before a hard conversation, in traffic, at the stove, before I answer a kid who’s melting down. It’s not magic. It’s a pause I can take anywhere.
