Eros

Not only sex: the old idea of a force that moves toward union, creation and beauty.

What it is

In the classical sense, eros is more than sexuality. It’s the generative impulse: the pull toward union, toward making things, toward beauty, at every scale. Plato’s Symposium follows it from love of one body up to love of beauty itself.

Seen this way, the same energy shows up in a kiss, a song, a garden and a good piece of work.

How it shows up for me

It changed how I think about desire. The urge to build something beautiful and the urge to be close to someone feel like the same river to me. I’d rather honor that than be embarrassed by it.
