Hard and soft limits

Some limits move with effort. Some never will. Knowing which is which saves you years.

What it is

A soft limit is a constraint you can push through with more time, better strategy, new skills or resources. Most “limits” in life turn out to be soft.

A hard limit can’t be overcome by any amount of effort, skill or will. It’s structurally or biologically impossible, not a gap you haven’t closed yet.

Finding a hard limit has its own feeling. Not jealousy of someone else, but the physical recognition of meeting an edge to your own agency, often for the first time. Low anger, warmth, sadness, vulnerability, and a strange weight.

The first hard wall

For people who’ve solved most things with effort, the first hard wall is a shock: a limit that work can’t move. Some limits aren’t puzzles. They’re just facts.

How it shows up for me

For most of my life, every wall was soft. Work harder, learn more, and it moved. Mine came when my son was four days old. I couldn’t breastfeed him, however hard I worked at being useful. I thought autonomy and capability were the same thing. La primera pared dura aparece exactamente donde vive el nuevo amor. The first hard wall appears exactly where the new love lives.

So I give what I can: I hold him after every feeding. It’s not nothing. It just isn’t everything. It felt like grief, and it also made me kinder to people who’ve been hitting hard walls their whole lives.
