Concept

Humility as permeability

Staying open enough that life can still teach you. Not smallness, not submission.

What it is

Humility, the way I mean it, is permeability: staying open enough that life can still get through to you and teach you something. It isn’t making yourself small, and it isn’t going along with whoever’s loudest.

A humble person can be confident and still be moved. A proud person has sealed the walls.

How it shows up for me

The days I feel most sure of myself are the days I learn the least. When I notice I can’t be surprised anymore, that’s my cue to go find someone who knows more than me.
