Mercy through the blade

Telling the truth sharply, as an act of care. Cutting illusions, not people.

What it is

Sometimes the kind thing is the sharp thing. A leader tells the truth clearly instead of softening it into nothing. The blade is always metaphorical: cutting illusions, not people. Striking falseness, not flesh.

Real mercy isn’t enabling weakness. Sometimes it means breaking an illusion. And it can feel like violence to the person receiving it, because it exposes what the heart has worked very hard to hide: pride, fear, and the refusal to grow.

How it shows up for me

I use it carefully, and I’ve gotten it wrong. The test I use now is whether I’d be willing to stay and help after the cut. If I just want to be right and leave, it isn’t mercy.
