Respect is acknowledgment plus restraint

Respect isn't manners or tone of voice. It's seeing someone's needs and limits, and holding back your own preference.

What it is

Respect isn’t manners or tone of voice. It’s acknowledgment plus restraint: seeing another person’s needs and limits, then holding back from imposing your preference on them.

Respect is guardrails, not reins. And restraint isn’t agreement. You can stop doing the thing someone asked you not to do and still say clearly that you disagree.

How it shows up for me

I learned it the hard way, with a kid who asked me not to come into his room. I kept going in, because I was the parent. Eventually I stopped, and told him I disagreed. That was the respectful version, and it took me too long.

In 2024 I put it differently: respect is a mutual energy that says I’ll treat you with consideration and kindness even when I disagree with you, and expect the same back.
