The traffic light

A three-step way to handle anger: red, stop. Yellow, think. Green, respond.

What it is

A simple technique for managing anger, often taught to kids:

  • Red: stop. Recognize what you’re feeling.
  • Yellow: think. Analyze, reason, consider the best response.
  • Green: respond.

The colors make it easy to remember in the moment, when remembering anything is hardest.

How it shows up for me

My mom taught it to me in 2013, in a message: “Se llama técnica de manejo del coraje, se usa el semáforo.” A few days later she wrote again: “ante las dificultades usa el semáforo. Realmente funciona.” She was right. I mostly fail at the red light, but when I hit it, the rest goes fine.
