Worrying before the wheel starts

Do your worrying before the decision. Once the wheel is spinning, relax and execute.

What it is

A business executive with a weakness for roulette noticed that players worried after placing their bets, when nothing could be done, instead of before, when thinking might help. If you want to worry, figure the odds before the decision is made. Once the wheel starts turning, you might as well relax and enjoy it.

William James said something similar: once execution begins, dismiss responsibility and care about the outcome, and give yourself fully to the doing.

How it shows up for me

I’m a natural post-decision worrier. Now I give the worrying a slot, before I commit, and when I catch myself replaying a decision that’s already made, I remind myself the wheel is spinning.
