Limit plus proximity

Hold the line and stay close. A boundary lands better with your body in the room.

What it is

Limit plus proximity is a way of setting boundaries with kids: the limit stays firm, and you stay near, with reassurance and physical or emotional presence. “No, we’re not doing that” and “I’m right here” in the same breath.

The child learns the line is real and that the relationship isn’t at risk because of it.

How it shows up for me

When I set a limit and then walk away, I get a fight. When I set it and sit down next to them, I usually get tears and then calm. The line is the same. My distance is what changed.
