No-drama discipline

Discipline means teaching. Connect with the child first, then redirect.

What it is

No-Drama Discipline, by psychiatrist Daniel J. Siegel and psychotherapist Tina Payne Bryson, starts from the root of the word: to discipline is to instruct, not to shout or reprimand. The method is connect, then redirect. Build the connection first, then steer the child toward better behavior.

It asks parents to account for the child’s age, brain development and point of view, to stay connected and loving even during extreme behavior, and to keep the limits clear. The goal is lasting skills, for behavior and for relationships, over short-term punishment. The authors talk about nurturing the “upstairs” brain, the part tied to decision-making and empathy.

How it shows up for me

Connect first is the hardest part for me, because my instinct is to fix the behavior immediately. When I get down on the floor and connect first, the redirect takes a fraction of the time.

I know the book through its summary and reviews more than a close reading.
