Patience problem or design problem?

Most friction looks like a patience problem when it is actually a design problem.

What it is

When something irritates you over and over, the usual answer is “be more patient.” Often the real problem is the design. A two-second request can hide a fifteen-second process, and tiny taxes paid over and over compound into resentment.

You think you need more patience. Maybe you need a different system. You think your kid is being difficult. Maybe the friction is in the request, not the child.

How it shows up for me

My daughter used to ask several times a day how much longer until I finished work. Each answer meant stopping, finding a clock, remembering my end time, subtracting, translating it for a five-year-old, and then finding my place again. The fix wasn’t patience. It was a clock that counts down to the end of my workday. The irritation disappeared on its own.
